    The visitation room was a glass box, and Bob Harris visited his daughter in it every Saturday, rain or shine, because that was the promise he had made and because there was nothing else in his life that he could promise anybody.



    He drove his Ford from the trailer park on the edge of Meadow Creek to the Containment Facility at noon, parked between a pickup full of化工 plant workers and a minivan full of women who had come to see someone they used to know before the sickness made them small, and walked into the building that smelled like a hospital and a prison and a zoo had all been built from the same blueprints.



    "Mr. Harris?" the guard said at the door. "You're early. Visitation doesn't start for twenty minutes."



    "I know," Bob said. "I just like to get a good spot."



    He had been saying that for two years, and the guard had never asked him what he meant.



    The glass box was about thirty feet square, floor covered in artificial turf that looked real from three paces and fake from one. Inside it, the children played. Not all children—only the ones who had shrunk, who had woken up one morning and found that their beds were too big and their door handles were out of reach and their mothers' faces, when they leaned close, filled entire windows.

    The choice presented itself in November, on a day so cold the glass box fogged from the inside.



    Dr. Novak called Bob into her office before his scheduled visitation. She had new data—data that changed everything.



    "We've found a way to reverse the process," she said.



    Bob felt something inside him stand up straight. "You can make them normal size again?"
