    He drove his Ford from the trailer park on the edge of Meadow Creek to the Containment Facility at noon, parked between a pickup full of化工 plant workers and a minivan full of women who had come to see someone they used to know before the sickness made them small, and walked into the building that smelled like a hospital and a prison and a zoo had all been built from the same blueprints.



    "Mr. Harris?" the guard said at the door. "You're early. Visitation doesn't start for twenty minutes."



    "I know," Bob said. "I just like to get a good spot."



    He had been saying that for two years, and the guard had never asked him what he meant.



    The glass box was about thirty feet square, floor covered in artificial turf that looked real from three paces and fake from one. Inside it, the children played. Not all children—only the ones who had shrunk, who had woken up one morning and found that their beds were too big and their door handles were out of reach and their mothers' faces, when they leaned close, filled entire windows.



    Emily was near the far wall, sitting with a boy Bob knew as Little Tim—Timothy O'Brien, sixteen, now approximately five centimetres tall, living in a shoebox that Bob had brought her on their first visit and that had become, apparently, her favourite piece of furniture.

    The choice presented itself in November, on a day so cold the glass box fogged from the inside.



    Dr. Novak called Bob into her office before his scheduled visitation. She had new data—data that changed everything.



    "We've found a way to reverse the process," she said.



    Bob felt something inside him stand up straight. "You can make them normal size again?"

    "I brought you something," he said, and lifted the room into the box. Not in appearance, but in the way she spoke to the crowd. She began to say things that were never in the original data. Things that felt like thoughts, not generated content.

    The crowd laughed. Not a nervous laugh. A warm, genuine laugh. The kind of laugh you hear when someone you love makes a joke you've heard a thousand times but never gets tired of.

And I — I enforce the distinction between what corporations want deleted and what the world needs to remember.

    I went back to my apartment that night and opened the assignment file. It contained three words: "investigate the weeper." I highlighted the text, pressed delete, and pressed enter.

    The file vanished. The assignment vanished. The connection to OmniLife vanished. I didn't miss it.

    The next morning, I sold my legal eye implant to a junk dealer in the Sump. I didn't need it anymore. The world looked different without it — less data, more texture. The rain was just rain, not a data stream of particulate matter and chemical composition. The neon was just neon, not a network of advertising signals. The people were just people, not walking data profiles.

    That evening, I went back to the plaza. I stood in the back of the crowd and watched Echo perform. I watched the holographic Mira cry tears made of light and speak words that were generated and genuine and something in between.

    I used to believe that data was truth. Then I watched a man build a ghost out of stolen memories and make it weep real tears. Now I think truth is whatever survives the simulation.

    And the ghost survived. The crowd survived. And I survived too, which was not something I had planned for but which, as it turned out, was the point of everything.
