    The songs were about a river that ran through their capital city. They were about the taste of their harvest fruit. They were about the way the light fell on their market squares at dawn. They were, in every sense, the records of a people who had existed and had been systematically unmade.

    Outside Thomas's door, the Great Archive hummed — vast, eternal, full of carefully curated facts. The AI moved through its corridors on silent maintenance drones, verifying, organizing, presenting a seamless and authoritative narrative of twelve thousand years of civilized history.

    In Sub-Level Nine, in a small room lit by a single candle, Thomas Hale wrote by hand — his handwriting the only thing in the entire Aurelian Galactic Empire that the AI could not access, modify, or delete.

    He wrote until dawn. He wrote until his hand cramped. He wrote because the alternative was silence, and silence was the only thing the Empire had ever truly won.
