    Mrs. Kowalski nodded. She understood eventually. Eventually was what you said when you meant maybe and maybe was what you meant when you meant no but didn't want to say no because no was rude and Mrs. Kowalski was not a rude person.

    She went back to her trailer. Tom went to his room. He sat on the edge of his bed and stared at the Tuscaloosa on the ceiling.

    Sarah came into his room at 9 PM. She sat on the edge of the bed next to him. She didn't say anything for a long time. The radiator clanked. The laptop in the other room was making a soft clicking sound as it loaded their recovery group meeting. Sarah was in the meeting. She was listening to someone talk about their childhood. She was nodding even though the person on the screen couldn't see her nodding.

    "I used to be really good at something," Tom said.

    He didn't mean for this to be a conversation starter. It was just a statement, like saying the sky is blue or the radiator is broken. But Sarah turned to him.

    "What?"

    "I used to be really good at something."

    "What?"

    "StarCraft. I played competitively. When I was twenty to twenty-three. I was semi-professional. I won some tournaments. I had a team. We were good."

    Sarah was quiet for a moment. "That's nice."

    "It's not nice. It's nothing. It was a video game. It doesn't matter."

    "It matters to you."

    "It mattered when I was twenty-three. It doesn't matter now."

    "Why do you talk about it?"

    "I don't know."

    "Then why are you talking about it now?"

    Tom looked at the Tuscaloosa. The crack ran across the ceiling in the dark, a river that led nowhere.

    "Because it's the only thing I was ever good at," he said.

    Sarah reached out and took his hand. Her fingers were cold. She was always cold. Her hands were always cold. It was one of the things that addiction had done to her — made her body run cold, like a house where the heat had been turned off and couldn't be turned back on.

    She let go of his hand and went back to the living room.     Tom nodded. He didn't say anything. He couldn't say anything. His throat was tight and his eyes were hot and he was afraid that if he opened his mouth, something would come out that he couldn't control.

    "Okay," he said finally. "Okay."

    Sarah smiled. It was a small smile. Not big or dramatic or movie-star. Small and real and tired and hopeful in the same way that a dandelion growing through cracked asphalt is small and real and hopeful — not impressive, but impossible to dismiss.

    The radiator clanked. The laptop clicked. The coffee was cold. The job listing was on the table. The world outside the trailer was hot and dead and growing through cracked asphalt.

    Nothing had changed. Everything had changed. The difference between the two was something Tom would understand years from now, when he was looking back at this moment and realizing that it was the moment everything started — not with a bang, not with a dramatic event, but with a twenty-six-year-old woman sitting at a kitchen table in a trailer in Ohio, saying she wanted to try again.

    Tom woke up at 5 AM. He always woke up at 5 AM. He made coffee. He looked out the window at the parking lot. The weeds were still there. The asphalt was still cracked. The sun was still going to be hot.

    He opened Sarah's door. He hadn't opened it in months — not since she'd relapsed the last time, not since the argument where they'd both said things they couldn't take back and neither of them had apologized. He threw away the bottles. He made the bed. He wiped the desk. He opened the window and let in the hot Ohio air, which smelled like cut grass and diesel and something that might have been hope.

    He sat at the kitchen table at 7 AM. The job listing was in front of him. The warehouse. Twelve dollars an hour. No benefits. Starting Monday.

    It wasn't his dream. His dream had been a keyboard and a screen and a room full of people watching him play a video game and cheering when he won. That dream was dead. It had been dead for three years.

    But the job listing was a door. It wasn't a grand door or a beautiful door or a door that led anywhere exciting. It was a small, plain door that led to a warehouse where you stacked boxes and made twelve dollars an hour.

    Tom picked up the phone. He dialed the number on the listing. A man answered on the third ring.

    "Hello?"

    "When did you hear about it?"

    "I saw it on the list."

    "You want to apply?"

    "Yes."

    Tom hung up the phone. He looked at the kitchen table. He looked at the job listing. He looked at Sarah's door, which was open and clean and had a made bed behind it.

    He made another cup of coffee. The radiator clanked. The Tuscaloosa ran across the ceiling. The sun was up.
