    Arthur turned from the window and looked at his friend's son—not son, never son, though God knew the boy looked at him as though he were the last solid thing in a world dissolving into chaos. "Tell them we march at dawn," Arthur said quietly. "And Tommy—bring the map. The old one. The one with the red markings."



    The boy nodded and disappeared into the corridor. Arthur walked to the desk, picked up the letter with hands that did not tremble—though they might have, he told himself, though they might have—and opened it.

    The Sepoy forces hit them like a tidal wave. Arthur held the line. He held it for two hours and forty-seven minutes, and in that time he watched forty-two men die before him—a British corporal shot through the throat, a young Gurkha boy of sixteen who smiled as the spear took him in the chest, Tommy's friend and namesake, Thomas McCulloch, who cried for his mother as he bled out on the mud.



    At three hours, when the last of the Sepoy forces had broken against Arthur's line like water against a cliff and were fleeing back into the plains, Arthur Pendelton stood alone at the center of the parade ground, surrounded by the bodies of his men and the wounded and the dying, and he did not feel victory. He felt only the vast and crushing weight of loss, and the terrible knowledge that every single one of those men had believed in him, had followed him into death with absolute faith, and that he had led them here.



    "Sir!" A voice. Arthur turned. It was Tommy, standing in the mud, bleeding from a wound in his left shoulder but standing, and alive. "Sir, we held. We held!"



    Arthur looked around at the carnage. Forty-two men dead. Twelve wounded. Three hundred had gone into battle. One hundred and forty-six remained.



    "Yes, Tommy," Arthur said quietly. "We held."



    But as he looked at the boy's triumphant face, Arthur Pendelton felt no triumph. He felt only the cold weight of the graves he had dug for his men, and the certain knowledge that tomorrow, or next week, or next month, he would be asked to dig more. And eventually, the graves would be too many, and the weight too great, and he would join the men he had sent into the ground beneath him.



    He took Tommy's arm, helped him to his feet, and together they walked among the dead, counting the cost of a war that no one had asked for and no one could explain.



    The rain began again.



    CHAPTER FOUR



    That night, in the quarter he shared with Tommy, Arthur sat at his desk and opened the drawer. He took out Lord Canning's letter and read it one final time. Then he took a pen and began to write.



    "To my sister Eleanor," he began, his hand steady despite the exhaustion that pressed upon him like lead. "If you are reading this, then I have failed to return. Do not mourn me. I chose this place. I chose these men. I chose this moment."



    He wrote for two hours, writing not of war or glory or duty, but of the garden in Kent, and the roses, and the way the light fell through the oak trees in autumn, and of their mother's voice singing hymns on Sunday mornings. He wrote of the men who had died, giving each one a name and a memory and a sentence of gratitude for the privilege of having known them.



    When he finished, he sealed the letter with the wax seal he had carried in his pocket for twenty-six years—the seal of a man who had once hoped to return home and tend roses and live a quiet life.

    But tonight, in the grey light of a dawn that had come too early and a rain that would not stop, Arthur Pendelton sat at his desk and felt, for the first time in twenty-six years of service to a vast and indifferent empire, that he had done something that mattered.



    Not for the Crown. Not for God. Not for glory.



    But for the men who had stood beside him, and who would stand beside him still, in the last and smallest phalanx that any man could ever assemble—the phalanx of three hundred souls who chose, against all reason and all probability, to stand together and face the darkness.

    CHAPTER ONE

"Tell them we march at dawn," Arthur said quietly. "And Tommy—bring the map. The old one. The one with the red markings."

    The boy nodded and disappeared into the corridor. Arthur walked to the desk, picked up the letter with hands that did not tremble—though they might have, he told himself, though they might have—and opened it.
