The Pale Shadows
The rifle butt cracked against the mist. I felt the shock travel up my arm, a cold line of pain that stopped at the elbow. The shadow did not scream. It did not fight. It simply broke apart into a fog that smelled of wet iron and old blood. I stood in the valley, my boots sinking into the mud, watching the cold seep into the leather. The pension was three years away. I needed the valley clear....
