The Wistful Incense
The smell hit me before the door did. It was the scent of wet ash and lilies, thick and cloying, rising from the linoleum of the St. Jude’s Hospital corridor like a ghost waking up. I stopped, my hand still on the mop handle, and my stomach turned over. It was the same smell that had filled the church on the day my father died, a smell I had spent twelve years trying to scrub out of my memory....
