The bronze foundry at the edge of the peninsula hummed with the heat of the furnaces, a low, constant drone that vibrated through the soles of the boots worn by the workers as they hauled crucibles of molten metal toward the casting beds. The air smelled of sulfur and wet earth, and the noise was a physical weight, pressing against the eardrums of anyone who stood too close to the open doors....
