The Wistful Throne
The brass weight of my father’s pocket watch sat heavy on my wrist, a cold, rusted anchor in the humid dark of the pit. I held the wrench in my other hand, the metal slick with sweat and black oil, and stared at the Heart. It was a loom the size of a house, buried three levels below the street in the subterranean textile mill of Ashworth & Sons. The machine was bleeding. Not metaphorically....
