The Faded Sutra
The cold in the archive was a physical weight, pressing against my spine like a damp wool coat. I had counted the hours since Margaret died: four thousand, three hundred and twelve. I counted them to keep the silence at bay. The Sutra sat on the reading table, its pages thin as onion skin, bleeding a faint, violet light that hummed in the low frequencies of the room.
