Chapter One I sat in the queue at the customs house, watching the unopened parcel on the counter. It was a thick, brown thing, sealed with the Fenwhistle stub of sealing wax, and it had been there for three days. The thaw was rotting the cobblestones outside, turning the mud into a slurry that sucked at our boots. Carts rattled past before the light, the sound of iron on stone marking the time....
