The dream always began with the sound of the turbine, a low, grinding thrum that vibrated in the marrow of my bones before I even opened my eyes to the grey, sputtering light of the sanatorium room. I was twelve years old, confined to a bed of iron and coarse linen, and the air in the chamber was so thick with the scent of carbolic soap and damp wool that it felt like breathing in wet sand....
