The cellar door was locked. Arthur knew this because the handle did not turn. He knew the handle was brass because it was cold against his palm. He did not know his name. He did not know why his hand was on the handle. He only knew the hunger. It was a physical thing, a hollow space in his chest where his heart should have been. He pulled. The wood groaned. The floorboards above him shuddered....
