The Distant Threshold
The ink in my pot has begun to smell of copper, a metallic tang that coats the back of my throat and refuses to wash away with water or wine. It is the fourteenth of October, in the year of our Lord 1492, and I have finally arrived at the Monastery of Saint Jude, a place of such remote and jagged isolation that the road to it seems less a path and more a wound cut into the side of the mountain....
