The Faded Masquerade
The paper was yellowed, the ink faded to a brownish smear, and the seal was drawn in red crayon, jagged and childish. Elias Thorne held it up to the light of the porch, his thumb resting on the torn edge where the paper had been ripped from the door. It was a warrant, or what used to be one. It had been shredded into strips, then pinned back together with rusted nails. The text was gibberish...
