"Pack it up, Arthur. You’re finished." The voice of Mr. Vane hung in the air of the fourth-floor office, dry and brittle as old cardboard. Arthur Hale did not look up from his desk. He was sliding a stack of invoices into a brown paper bag, his fingers numb. The paper was heavy, damp with the condensation that had been sweating off the windows all morning.
