The Pale Dance
The quill in my hand was a bad one, the nib split and weeping ink like a wound that would not close. I held it over the donor ledger of the Abbey of St. Jude, the parchment yellowed and brittle as dried skin, and waited for the silence to break. It did not. Outside, the wind stripped the last leaves from the sycamores, a dry, rattling sound that filled the vault with the noise of old bones...
