The Faded Road
The shovel bit into the frozen earth with a sound like a bone breaking. I pulled the soil back, my breath coming in short, sharp bursts that misted in the air. The wind off the moor was sharp enough to cut, carrying the smell of wet wool and old wood. I was digging for the pipe. The pipe was three feet down, according to the map, but the map was drawn by a man who had been dead for forty years....
