Elias’s hand closed around the brass handle of the surveyor’s theodolite, his knuckles whitening against the cold metal as he tried to steady the trembling limb. The instrument was useless now; the horizon had dissolved into a grey, churning wall of mist that smelled of wet rot and ozone.
