The Distant Machine
The brass gear lay in my palm, cold and heavy, its teeth worn smooth by the friction of years. It was the escapement wheel for the Great Astronomical Clock, a commission that would secure my name in the guild records of Bruges, or break me. I turned it over, watching the light catch the grooves, and heard it. Not the clink of metal, but a low, rhythmic wheeze, like a man breathing in his sleep....
