The glue was cold, but my hands were not. I pressed the brass casing together, holding it with the desperate grip of a man trying to stop water from a cracked pipe, and watched the needle shiver. It did not point north. It spun, a frantic, dizzying blur against the white face of the dial, and the sound it made was not a click but a low, grinding hum that seemed to come from inside my own teeth....
