The Faded Quadrant
I was scrubbing the brass housing of the quadrant when the needle jumped. It spun once, twice, then locked onto the floorboards. The metal was warm, hotter than my thumb should have allowed, and it hummed against my palm like a live wire. I set it on the desk. The needle stayed put, pointing at the grain of the oak. Outside, the ventilation fans in the mine kicked up their low, rhythmic thrum....
