The rain lashed against the high, narrow windows of the infirmary, a rhythmic drumming that did little to drown out the wet, rattling cough of the old Marshal. I sat beside his bed, my hand gripping the edge of the iron frame, my knuckles white, while he stared at the ceiling with eyes that had seen too much war and too little mercy.
