The Faded Sutra
The quill trembled in my right hand, the nib scratching a thin, red line across the vellum. The smell was copper and wet wool, a scent that had defined my life since I first ground the pigment in the Archive basement. I was Elias, forty-two, and I was trying to save my sister. Mara was fading. Not dying, exactly, but becoming translucent, her edges blurring into the damp air of our attic room....
