The Faded Photograph
The orchard did not bleed for long, but the stain it left on the deed was permanent. I stood at the edge of the property, the fog rolling off the valley in thick, grey sheets that smelled of wet wool and decay. My husband, Thomas, had died here three years ago, or so the town believed. I held the deed in my hand, the paper brittle and yellowed, waiting for the man who would decide its worth....
