The Distant Garden
The cake was a monument to excess. It rose from the silver platter like a ziggurat of cream and sponge, layered with the heavy, cloying sweetness of apricot jam. You stood before it, a small figure in a grey suit that fit you too well, as if tailored to your shyness. The hall was vast, a cathedral of polished mahogany and gaslight, the air thick with the scent of lilies and expensive perfume....
