The Golden Crossing
The train left at dawn. Margaret stood on the platform, her breath forming small, fleeting ghosts in the cold air. She did not look back. She had promised she would not. The station was empty, save for the shuffling of a porter who moved like a man walking through deep water. The iron tracks glistened with frost. They stretched away into the gray, a silver vein cutting through the dark earth....
