"You have brought the seed." The voice came from the shadows of the cellar, low and thick as wet wool. I did not turn. I could not. My legs were rooted to the flagstones, stiff with the cold that seeped up through the soles of my boots. I held the clay pot in my hands. It was warm. It breathed.
