The rain did not fall so much as it descended, a gray curtain drawn tight against the high, narrow windows of the Blackwood Keep. Inside the great hall, the air was thick with the scent of wet stone, old wax, and the metallic tang of fear. Sir Thomas Bradshaw stood in the center of the floor, his armor dented and darkened by mud, his breathing a ragged rasp that echoed off the vaulted ceiling....
