The Faded Paradox
The letter in my pocket felt like a stone, cold and heavy against my thigh. It was addressed to me from the firm of Halloway & Sons, but the ink was smeared, as if written in a hurry or in fear. I walked the perimeter of the Blackwood Textile Mill, the steam hissing from the vents like a dying animal. It was 1893, and the air tasted of coal dust and rust.
