The Distant Machine
The ink was wet. It glistened on the parchment like a bruise. Edmund sat in the high tower. The wind howled against the leaded glass. It was a sound like teeth grinding. He held the quill. His hand trembled. Not from cold. The cold was sharp and honest. He shivered. He did not trust the shiver. He looked at the letter. It was addressed to no one. Or perhaps to everyone.
