The bus smelled of wet wool and diesel. It was a stale, heavy scent that clung to the back of the throat. Elias sat in the middle row, knees pressed together. He held a paper cup of coffee. It was cold. The liquid had turned a dark, muddy brown. He did not drink it. He just held it. The grip was tight. His knuckles were white. Outside, the city of Chicago passed in a blur of gray buildings....
