The Distant Clue
The moth was dead on the window sill. Margaret stared at it. Its wings were torn. One side was a ragged strip of grey dust. The other was still whole, pale as bone. She did not blink. She could not look away. It sat there, a broken thing, against the cold glass. Outside, the palace grounds were dark. The wind shook the bare branches of the oak trees. They scraped against the sky like nails....
