The Distant Joke
The road did not end; it simply ceased to be a road. One moment, I was driving the black sedan, the tires humming against the wet asphalt of the interstate, the rain blurring the windshield into a gray smear. The next, the asphalt dissolved into moss. The sky above was not the overcast gray of a November afternoon but a deep, bruised violet, punctuated by stars that pulsed like slow heartbeats....
