The ink was wet. It always was. Marcus sat at the heavy oak desk, the surface scarred by centuries of nervous hands. Before him lay the scroll. Not parchment. Not paper. Skin. Or something that looked like it, pale and taut under the gaslight. The letters were not carved into it. They were grown there, dark veins pulsing beneath the surface of the text. A cipher.
