The fog rolled into the harbor like a living thing. It smelled of brine and rust. It smelled of old paper. I stood on the pier. I held the letter. The ink was fading. The words were blurring. I could not read them anymore. I had read them a thousand times. They were gone. Only the shape remained. A ghost of a name. A ghost of a promise. The town was waking up.
