The Distant Nightmare
The sky cracked open before dawn. Not with thunder. No. Just a tear. A long, jagged split in the blue, weeping gold light that smelled of ozone and burnt sugar. I watched it from the window of Cell 4B. The bars were cold. My hands were cold. I waited for the alarm. It never came. The light thickened. It turned the gray concrete of the corridor into something soft. Like bread dough. Like flesh....
