The Distant Wound
The bell in the tower did not ring. It cracked. A sound like a bone snapping under a boot, followed by the groan of stone settling into itself. I stood in the center of the Great Hall, my hands shaking, holding a cup of cold tea. The tea had gone to my lips, but I could not swallow. The dust from the broken bell settled on my shoulders. It looked like ash. It looked like the end of things....
