The Faded Frequency
The soup was cold. I stared at the bowl. It sat on the steel tray, a dark, viscous pool of lentils and thyme. The steam had long since died. The room smelled of wet wool and antiseptic. And beneath that, something else. A scent like ozone. Like a storm trapped in a glass jar. I lifted the spoon. My hand did not shake. I am a soldier. I do not shake. But the spoon felt heavy. Heavier than lead....
