The Distant Joke
The hawk was bleeding. It hung in the air above the porch, wings locked, a dark smudge against the gray sky. It did not fall. It just hovered. A wound opened in its chest, a red flower blooming in the feathers. Mara watched it. She held her coffee cup with both hands. The liquid was cold. "It’s broken," she said. She spoke to the house. She spoke to the silence. The house answered with creaks....
