The needle slipped. It missed the vein. Blood welled, dark and hot, against the rubber band. "Try again," said the Judge. His voice was dry. Like leaves. Thomas flinched. He looked at the syringe. The liquid inside was clear. It shimmered. It looked like water. It looked like time. "I can't," Thomas whispered. "Try again," the Judge repeated. The room was cold. The air smelled of antiseptic....
