The Golden Maze
The ink was dry, or it would have been, had it been ink at all. It was a pigment made from ground charcoal and the resin of the pine trees that ringed the abbey walls, mixed with a drop of my own blood to bind it to the vellum. I held the quill, a splinter of swan feather, between my thumb and forefinger, and stared at the symbol I had drawn. It was a circle, broken by a single, jagged line...
