The Faded Road
The bread was black. Not burnt, but black as the soil of the graveyard where the old oaks stood. It sat in the center of the long oak table, a dense, wet mass that seemed to pulse with a slow, terrible rhythm. The hall was warm. The air was thick with the smell of yeast and iron. Thirty men sat around the table. They were elders of the valley. They wore wool coats that smelled of damp stone....
