The Golden Circuit
The rain did not wash the grime away. It only made the coal dust slick against the skin, turning the grey powder of the mill floor into a paste that caked in the creases of our knuckles. I wrote the date on the back of a scrap of paper, folded it, and tucked it into the lining of my coat. I have done this every day for three years. The paper is thin. The ink is fading. But the words remain....
