The ink was still wet when the rain began to fall, a fine, grey mist that seeped through the high, arched windows of the scriptorium and turned the parchment into a skin of trembling water. Thomas sat at his desk, the quill suspended in his hand, his breath shallow and quick. He was writing to his brother, but the words would not come. Instead, he wrote the name of the place they were leaving....
