The Faded Root
The willow tree in the center of the quad had not moved in forty years. It stood as a static green archipelago in the grey sea of the pavement, its roots visible where the soil had eroded, gripping the earth with a tenacity that seemed less biological than contractual. I sat beneath its canopy, my back against the rough, peeling bark, watching the students drift by in their muted wool coats....
