The house stood at the edge of the moor, a skeletal thing of blackened timber and weeping thatch, where the wind did not blow but rather clawed, tearing at the eaves with the patience of a predator that knew its prey was already dead. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of damp wool and old blood, a heavy, cloying perfume that clung to the back of the throat and refused to be washed away....
