The table groaned under the weight of it. Roast swine. Geese. Loaves of bread the size of a man’s head. The air was thick, heavy with the smell of rendered fat and stale beer. It tasted of iron. It tasted of dust. It tasted of the years. Elias sat at the head. He did not eat. His hands were clasped on the wood. The wood was worn smooth by generations of elbows.
