The bell rang three times. Then it rang a fourth. Margaret stood in the kitchen, her hands wrapped around a clay pot. The handle was hot. She did not let go. The steam rose in a thin, white column, smelling of rosemary and boiled bone. It filled the small room. It filled the air around her lungs. The door opened. Thomas entered. He wore his gray coat.
