The wind tore at the eaves. It was a bad wind. Cold and sharp. It smelled of wet rot and old dust. Inside the house, the air was still. It was thick. It felt like holding breath. I found the letter in the drawer. It was tucked under a dead moth. The paper was yellow. Soft. It crumbled at the edges. My hands shook. I could not stop them. I am a boy of twelve.
